What’s the Question?
I’m struggling right now, balancing life, work and responsibilities. Stepping ever so softly on that high wire, hoping to make it to the other side. The Question, “Will she…?” lingers in my mind.
Will she do it? Will she make it?
It doesn’t only pertain to my life or my life as a writer. It’s relevant to my novel, your novel and every other writers dream. It relates to your life story and the story you are creating.
The Question. And only your story has an answer.
Every tale has a burning question. The gem of a story, the overriding goal that needs an ending. It’s the thread that every story has, it keeps the reader dancing on “The Razor’s Edge”. It keeps the reader wanting to turn the page. The suspense. The intrigue.
Every chapter poses a new question, a new path, a new journey. A set of events which shapes the characters decisions, molds the story and defines the goals. Sometimes, there is more than one question.
I try to wrap the story around my head so that I can pick apart the most burning questions and bring forth the truest of answers – and try to sum it up for a short, sweet query letter. It’s difficult when so much action occurs in a story – so many important discoveries, so much truth, so many questions.
I was re-reading the first critique I received from my editor, regarding the first three chapters of the book. In my editor’s words, “I am curious to see what happens to her [Eve's] business.”
And that’s when the question hit me, the bottom line of “The Razor’s Edge” .
Will she sacrifice everything for love?
Will she…?
